Waterfront Cabins
- a sustainable concept

Our story began in 2016, when Älvstranden Utveckling AB was commissioned to transform the old Frihamnen shipyard area into a sustainable and socially inclusive neighborhood for all. Kvillepiren was to become a place for temporary housing, to contribute to the city's development and solve the housing shortage in the short term. Svenska Hem in Bromma won the tender with the project Waterfront Cabins - the first project of its kind on this scale anywhere in Europe. The vision is and has always been to offer unique, high-quality and comfortable studios with a circular and scalable concept that can be adapted to different locations and lifestyles.

Sustainable studios

  • We can recycle up to 98% of building materials.
  • The core of our studios is produced with 100% renewable wood.
  • We have chosen to transport materials by water to minimise emissions.
  • All material transport is streamlined in volume to reduce the number of transports.
  • The heating and cooling system is based on energy-efficient hot air pumps.

Circular construction - Prefabricated studios

Meeting the housing needs of the future requires a circular mindset, which means striving to increase material recycling and minimize waste during construction. Our circular thinking already started with the development of our innovative housing concept - modular studios. All our studios are manufactured in our own factory in Oskarshamn, through a process called prefabrication. Each studio is a so-called "module", which has been built inside the factory. This also means that all equipment, including kitchens and all furniture, is pre-assembled in each studio before they reach the pier. This is a circular construction method as we can recycle as much as 98% of our construction waste, as well as packaging materials and protective plastics.

The advantages of prefabricated studios are many, but the concept is particularly well suited to the construction of temporary housing. The modules can be easily moved in the future and reassembled elsewhere.

Material choice - 100% renewable wood

Another important aspect of circular construction is making smart material choices that can be recycled. That's why we have chosen Swedish wood as the core of our product. The frame of our studios consists of 100% renewable wood material in Sylvia™ CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) from Stora Enso. The furnishings are also made of wood, in addition to white goods, pipes/taps, porcelain and tiles. The wood material comes from sustainable forestry and is produced in Grums, Värmland.

Did you know that wood also improves your health?

Most people know the benefits of spending time in nature. What may not be known is that indoor wooden environments can have the same impact on us. Spending time in wooden houses increases our well-being, which translates into better focus, higher productivity and greater creativity. The properties of wood can improve our physical health by equalizing humidity and reducing the amount of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in the indoor environment. In addition, studies show that wood often creates a sense of calm and tranquillity in people - and who wouldn't want these benefits in their home?

Sustainable transport

Our modular studios are transported to the pier fully equipped and ready for assembly. The route from the factory to our pier is optimized to create efficiency while reducing environmental impact. By choosing ship transportation as much as possible, we can more than halve our negative emissions. We also make sure to maximize transport volumes on both ships and trucks.

"What a tree can do" by Stora Enso

The world needs a new approach to materials. Stora Enso develops and produces a range of packaging for pulp, wood, building solutions, paper and biomaterials derived from wood. But we are not content with that. We believe that everything made from fossil-based materials today can be made from trees tomorrow. Have you ever wondered what a tree can do? Watch the Stora Enso movie and find out.
